Waxing Before & Aftercare

Waxing Before & Aftercare

Waxing – Pre and Post Care

Proper aftercare is just as important as the waxing itself. Be sure to follow the recommendations of your therapist and use this guide for tips on what to do (and what to avoid) before and after your waxing session.

Before Your Wax

Once you’ve scheduled your wax, here are a few tips to help minimise discomfort and maximise the smooth results:

  • If you're concerned about the pain or it's your first waxing experience, consider taking 1-2 paracetamol about 30-40 minutes before your appointment to reduce surface discomfort.
  • Ensure your hair is long enough to be fully removed from the roots—about 0.5 cm. If you’ve shaved recently, it may take a couple of waxes for your hair to get into a consistent growth cycle for the best results.

After Your Wax

You’ve just invested time, money, and a little discomfort for smooth, hair-free skin—so it’s important to take care of it. Follow these aftercare steps to ensure the best results.

Immediately After Your Wax

It’s common to experience slight redness or a prickly, rash-like sensation after waxing. This should fade within a few hours as it’s typically a histamine response. Since waxing removes hair from the root, it's crucial to keep the area clean and free of bacteria:

  • Avoid sunbathing for at least 12 hours (try to have your waxing done a day before a holiday).
  • Stay out of chlorinated pools for 24 hours.
  • Refrain from spa baths or saunas.
  • Don’t apply any lotions or fragrances for at least 12 hours, as these can cause irritation or a burning feeling.
  • Avoid touching the waxed area to prevent introducing bacteria.
  • Apply a tea tree oil-based product to help with its natural antibacterial properties.

Also keep in mind, if you normally shave your legs, after your first waxing treatment your legs can still feel prickly to the touch. You may need 4-6 waxing treatments to ensure that all growth cycles have come through the skin.

3-10 Days After Waxing

As your skin heals and the follicles close, it’s important to prevent ingrown hairs. These occur when new, softer hairs get trapped under the skin. Follow these simple tips to avoid this:

  • Gently exfoliate the area every 2-3 days using a soft brush or exfoliating glove—especially from day 3 to day 10. There’s no need to scrub hard; a light exfoliation is enough.
  • Use a product like PFB after showering. This contains lactic acid, which helps remove dead skin cells and keeps the hair follicle clear.

By sticking to these aftercare steps, you’ll not only maintain smoother skin for longer, but you’ll also make your next waxing session faster and less painful.

How Long Will Your Wax Last?

If it’s your first time or you wax occasionally, you may notice some new hair growth within 2-3 weeks due to the natural hair growth cycle. This regrowth will be sparse, typically about a third of the usual amount, and the rest will follow shortly after.

With regular waxing, your skin should stay hair-free for 3-6 weeks. Over time the density of hair in the waxed area may also decrease.
