Spray Tanning Before & Aftercare

Spray Tanning Before & Aftercare

Before Your Spray Tan

Exfoliate
Exfoliating your skin is key to removing dead skin cells and ensuring an even tan. Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt to cleanse your body 24 hours before your appointment. Pay extra attention to rough areas like elbows, knees, and ankles.

Shave or Wax (if needed)
If you plan to shave or wax, do so at least 24 hours before your appointment. Shaving right before the tan can open pores, potentially leading to uneven color. Waxing can exfoliate the skin, which may affect how your tan develops.

Avoid Moisturisers, Deodorants, and Makeup.

On the day of your spray tan, avoid applying moisturisers, deodorant, or makeup. These products can create a barrier on your skin, which may prevent the tan from adhering evenly.

Wear Loose, Dark Clothing
Wear loose-fitting clothing to your appointment, as tight clothes can rub off the tan before it has time to set. Dark colors are best since the tanning solution can sometimes transfer to clothing.

Arrive Clean and Dry
Arrive at your appointment clean, dry, and free of oils, lotions, or perfumes. Your skin should be free of any product buildup, so the tanning solution can adhere evenly.

Avoid Sun Exposure
If you plan to be out in the sun before your tanning session, try to limit exposure to avoid skin damage and uneven color from natural tanning.

During the Spray Tan Session

Protect Your Hands, Feet, and Nails
You will be provided with a barrier cream to protect your hands. You will be provided with cardboard "sticky feet" to protect the soles of your feet and your technician will cleanse your nails after your spray tan session. You will also be provided with a hair net to cover your hair and prevent any of the tan getting onto your hair.

Stay Relaxed and Follow the Technician’s Instructions.

The technician will guide you on how to position your body during the spray tan application. Relax and follow the instructions to get the best, most even coverage.

Choose Your Desired Shade
If you’re unsure about the shade, ask your technician for advice based on your skin type. They may use a light, medium, or dark solution depending on your preferences and natural complexion.

After Your Spray Tan

Wait to Shower

After your spray tan, do not shower for at least 6-8 hours (or as recommended by your technician). This allows the tanning solution to fully develop. Avoid any activity that might cause sweating or friction during this period.

Avoid Sweating and Water
For the first 8-12 hours after your tan, avoid sweating (no exercise) and any water contact (including swimming or showering) to prevent streaks or patches.

Moisturise Regularly
Once you shower, pat your skin dry and apply a hydrating moisturiser. Moisturising daily helps to maintain your tan and prevents it from fading unevenly.

Use a Tan Extender
For longer-lasting results, consider using a tan extender lotion. These products contain a small amount of DHA to help maintain your tan for a few extra days.

Avoid Exfoliating Too Soon
Avoid exfoliating your skin for at least 4-5 days after your spray tan. Exfoliating too soon can remove the tan or cause it to fade faster.

Be Gentle with Your Skin
Avoid harsh scrubbing or using products with alcohol, which can dry out your skin and cause your tan to fade prematurely. Opt for gentle body washes and moisturisers.

Wear Sunscreen
Spray tans do not offer sun protection, so make sure to apply sunscreen if you're exposed to the sun. This helps protect your skin and prevent your tan from fading quickly due to UV exposure.

Sleep Smart
If you sleep shortly after your spray tan, wear loose, dark clothing and use dark sheets to avoid rubbing off the tan. The tan may transfer to bedding during the first 12 hours.

Additional Tips

Maintaining Even Colour: After a few days, if your tan starts to fade or patch, gently exfoliate to even out the color before moisturising.

Touch-ups: You may need a touch-up every 7-10 days, depending on how your skin naturally sheds and how well you’ve maintained your tan.

Avoid Tight Clothing: For the first 24 hours, avoid tight clothes that may rub against your skin and leave marks or uneven patches.

By following these guidelines, you’ll maximise your spray tan’s longevity and ensure a natural, glowing look that lasts!
